[Invited Lecture Series] DETECTING CAUSATION IN HEALTH RESEARCH: MENDELIAN RANDOMIZATION

This lecture explores Mendelian Randomization studies as an effective alternative to traditional epidemiological studies for establishing causality in health research related to non-communicable chronic diseases. It delves into the design, challenges, and efficacy of these studies.

INCAA Invited Lecture Series 2024-25

Population based observational association studies related to non- communicable chronic diseases (NCDs) and their risk factors are common in biological anthropology. The associations observed in regular epidemiological studies cannot be translated directly for public health practice due to confounding and other biases. For establishing the causal relations, observational associations must be tested on the most reliable experimental ground of randomized control trials which are difficult to conduct due to its exorbitant cost and ethical constraints. Mendelian randomization (MR) studies provide an alternative framework for testing the causality between the modifiable exposures and diseases outcomes. This lecture will focus on MR design, its challenges, and efficacy in establishing causation in health research pertaining to NCDs.

Dr. Vipin Gupta is Associate Professor in Department of Anthropology, University of Delhi. He has extensive experience in conducting research in Public Health, Genetic Epidemiology, Lifecourse and Social Epidemiology related to NCDs in India. He is the Principal Investigator of the GaRBH cohort (Gestational Route to Healthy Birth- GaRBH) based in Bikaner, Rajasthan and a recipient of the most prestigious Wellcome-Trust DBT India Alliance grant in Clinical and Public Health. In collaboration with LSHTM, UK, and NIN, Hyderabad, he has developed a cohort study i.e. Andhra Pradesh Children and Parent Study (APCAPS)

related to cardiometabolic risk factors. He has got several research grants from national and international funding agencies and authored more than 80 research articles in reputed journals with h-index of 30. He has received the Excellence Award for In-Service Teachers in 2021 by University of Delhi for his outstanding service and contributions in research.
